Over the last few weeks we have been organizing what will sure to be a new Northwest cider tradition. Washington Cider Week - "A state-wide celebration of craft cider" was officially announced yesterday.

One of the world's leading experts in cider production, Mitchell F&D Limited, in association with the Northwest Agriculture Business Center and the WSU Northwest Washington Research and Extension Center, offers this class as follows:
Part 1: An Understanding of Cider & Perry.
Including extensive sensory analysis of cider & perry, this section aims to enable the participant to:
- Develop a broad appreciation of the main types & styles of cider and perry, along with an understanding of the cider industry;
- Gain an outline knowledge & understanding of the main principles & practices involved in making cider & perry;
- Explore ways in which to encourage the positive & responsible development of the industry & its products.
This part of the class is also designed for individuals who wish to gain a recognized industry qualification – The NACM Certification in Cider & Perry Appreciation. This is the only formal cider industry specific qualification available in the world. For those who would like to enter for thisoptional certificate, an additional registration fee is payable. This fee is indicated on the course registration form. Delegates will sit through a short examination and submit an organoleptic evaluation portfolio (undertaken during the class) for subsequent assessment and feedback.

The course is suitable for beginners, new businesses and existing producers (large & small-scale) alike.

Peter Mitchell-a highly qualified and internationally recognized expert in cider and perry making and tasting, leads the class. With over 25 years of practical experience, he is a professional trainer, a UK and USA cider competition judge and an award-winning producer in his own right.

Orchard Management: Cider Fruit Production - 06/25

This one day class offers the basics of tree fruit production with emphasis on cider and dessert apple varieties. Expert orchardist Gary Moulton will discuss topics on rootstock, nutrient management, pest management, irrigation, orchard layout planting, pruning, and harvest techniques. The class coincides with Cider Production: Principles & Practices but is open to anyone interested in learning about the essentials of orchard management. The format of the class will be a lecture and discussion followed by an optional tour of nearby Red Barn Cider and orchard.
Registration fee to attend the class is $75/person. The fee includes snacks, light lunch, and all lecture materials. Fee is waived for participants attending the Cider Production: P&P course.
Instructor Gary Moulton started in 1980 with the Fruit Horticulture department at the WSU Research Station in Mt. Vernon. In 1991, he took over management, direction, and leadership of the program. He holds a Master’s from WSU in Plant Pathology specializing in fruit diseases, and a Bachelor’s in Pomology/Fruit Science from Cal-Poly San Luis Obispo. He has authored several WSU Extension publications and produced a widely regarded video on pruning fruit trees.

Washington Brewers Festival is the biggest and one of the longest running of the six beer tasting events presented by the Washington Beer Commission.
4 NW cidermakers and more than 60 breweries (50 from Washington state!) will be on hand to pour more than 200 craft brews in this annual pilgrimage of 15,000 to Saint Edward State Park in Kenmore, June 17-19.

Cider Summit NW Expands to Portland Diverse Gathering of Artisanal Ciders Comes to Emerging South Waterfront Neighborhood
SBS Imports and the Seattle Beer Collective are pleased to announce the expansion of their successful Cider Summit NW Festival to Portland, OR. The inaugural Portland event will be on Saturday, June 11, 2011 from 11am - 7pm at Elizabeth Caruthers Park in the emerging South Waterfront neighborhood along the Willamette River. The event is presented by Barbur World Foods & Bushwhacker Cider.
Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 (cash only) at the door and are available online via Brown Paper tickets and at many of the area's leading bottle shops. Admission includes a tasting glass and 10 drink tickets. From 11a‐12n arriving guests will receive 2 additional "happy hour" tickets. Additional drink tickets will be available for sale onsite at $2 per ticket.
