Workshops Session C1: New Apple Orchard Development: From the Soil Up
Mark Mazzola (USDA-ARS), Nick Gunn (Wandering Aengus Ciderworks, Salem, OR), Keith Kisler (Finnriver Farm & Cidery, Chimacum, WA)
This workshop will introduce farmers to the requirements of developing a new apple orchard – both cider and sweet apple varieties. Mark Mazzola (USDA-ARS) will cover the basics of understanding your soil for site planning and establishment of a new orchard. Orchardists Nick Gunn (Wandering Aengus Ciderworks, Salem, OR) and Keith Kisler (Finnriver Farm & Cidery Chimacum,WA) will discuss apple varieties and the support systems and equipment needed to plant new orchard. An overall discussion of the demand for hard cider apples will also be included.
