Tilth Producers of Washington is having their annual conference in Vancouver, WA from November 7th to the 9th. One of their workshop sessions features two NWCA members. Anyone interested in apple orchard establishment should try to attend! More general conference information listed below.

Workshops Session C1: New Apple Orchard Development: From the Soil Up

Mark Mazzola (USDA-ARS), Nick Gunn (Wandering Aengus Ciderworks, Salem, OR), Keith Kisler (Finnriver Farm & Cidery, Chimacum, WA)

This workshop will introduce farmers to the requirements of developing a new apple orchard – both cider and sweet apple varieties. Mark Mazzola (USDA-ARS) will cover the basics of understanding your soil for site planning and establishment of a new orchard. Orchardists Nick Gunn (Wandering Aengus Ciderworks, Salem, OR) and Keith Kisler (Finnriver Farm & Cidery Chimacum,WA) will discuss apple varieties and the support systems and equipment needed to plant new orchard. An overall discussion of the demand for hard cider apples will also be included.

Tilth Producers of Washington 40th Anniversary Conference, November 7-9 in Vancouver, Washington, will feature keynote addresses by Raj Patel and Mary Berry, opening symposia on "Growing for Nutrition" and "Holistic Management," Technical Assistance Fair, and 30 workshops on a wide range of topics related to rural and urban food production, education and advocacy.
