Heirloom apple orcharding workshop for hard cider

March 17th 8:30 am to 4 pm

Cost: $20 (includes lunch)

This workshop will cover the planning and implementation of an heirloom hard cider orchard. Topics covered will include:

• market for heirloom, cider specific apples
• variety and rootstock selection considerations
• the benefits/disadvantages of grafting your own trees
• pruning system selection (e.g., slender spindle vs. central leader)
• orchard system selection (trellis vs. freestanding trees)
• irrigation, fertility, and pest management
• tree fruit physiology (understanding plant growth and development in relation to tree fruit

production)
• labor and mechanical harvest

Speakers include Clive Kaiser (OSU tree fruit physiologist), Kevin Zelinski (orchardist and master cidermaker for EZ Orchards), and Nick Gunn (president of the Northwest Cider Association and industry consultant).

The afternoon session will be conducted outside at EZ Orchards in Salem followed by cider tasting.
