Cider Institute of North America Created to Support Industry Sustainability
In recognition of the need and demand for training and development of cider production skills in North America, the industry is launching a new organization, the Cider Institute of North America (CINA).
This initiative is designed to build on and, ultimately, take over from the training provided in North America since 2003 by Mitchell F&D Limited’s Cider & Perry Academy (CPAC). CPAC is a UK based training organization specializing in cider and perry production. The initial focus of CINA will be to develop and provide training from foundation skills through to that of a master cider maker.
To drive this initiative, the new organization will include members of the North American cider industry working in partnership with CPAC. Courses will be offered by multiple universities in North America. CINA will also facilitate other mechanisms for the development of cider making skills and technology development and transfer.
“We are pleased to be creating a new institution that will assist in the evolution of the North American cider industry,” according to Nick Gunn, CINA’s Board Chair and co-owner of Wandering Aengus Ciderworks of Salem, Oregon. “Peter Mitchell has been an invaluable source of knowledge for North American cidermakers. We plan to utilize this new organization to build upon his knowledge for the future of the rapidly growing cider industry.”
CINA’s Board of Directors includes a broad representation of the North American industry – small and large cider makers and geographical diversity. The committee also includes University representation. CINA is in the process of applying for tax-exempt status under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
