The Cider Master Reserve cider will be available in very limited quantities in Oregon, Washington, California, Alaska, Idaho, Hawaii, the Chicago area, parts of Nevada and Minnesota. About 2 Towns Ciderhouse

2 Towns Ciderhouse produces craft hard apple cider in Corvallis, Oregon. Founded in 2010 by three friends living in the two towns of Eugene and Corvallis, OR, 2 Towns Ciderhouse strives to bring craft hard apple cider back to the people.  2 Towns Ciderhouse is proud to be a part of the resurgence of America’s first craft beverage of choice. In 2012 we began planting our own cider apple orchard, and since the beginning we’ve been committed to supporting local apple growers by insisting on using the finest fresh-pressed 100% NW apples. We never take shortcuts in the cider-making process—and never add sugar or essence flavorings—but instead let the fresh, naturally fermented ingredients speak for themselves. Spokane Cider Company Wins International Honors

Local cidery receives top honors at international competition

(04-22-15) – Liberty Ciderworks, based in downtown Spokane, received numerous awards including four Silver Medals, a Gold Medal and “Best in Class” honors at the recent Great Lakes International Cider and Perry (GLINTCAP) event. GLINTCAP, held annually in Grand Rapids Michigan, is the world’s largest cider competition.

The top award was given to the firm’s ‘Stonewall’ cider, a product aged in Dry FlyTM whiskey barrels. The category in which Stonewall was entered featured 193 entries, with Liberty’s cider placing first. Across all commercial categories, only three ciders earned a “Best in Class” distinction among 480 total entries from around the globe.

“We were floored when we saw the results for Stonewall,” said Rick Hastings, co-owner and head cidermaker at Liberty. “We’ve had great feedback from customers and our peers, but this is about as big an honor as anyone gets in the cider business. It’s a big-league win for us, for our growers, and for our friends at Dry Fly Distillery.”

The firm’s Silver Medals were won with its Kingston Black SV, a single-varietal cider made with fruit from Steury Orchards in Potlatch, Idaho; Macintosh SV, another single-varietal made with fruit gathered at Bishop Orchards in Garfield, Washington; its dry-hopped ‘Turncoat’ cider, and its unique, port-style Manchurian Crabapple cider.

Hard cider is the fastest-growing segment in today’s beverage industry, with sales over the past few years rising at a 70% annual pace. Membership in the Northwest Cider Association, an industry group promoting small-scale cideries across Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and British Columbia, has gone from 18 to 56 cideries in the last 18 months, with many more in the planning stage.

Liberty Ciderworks products are currently sold statewide, with all production taking place in its small downtown Spokane facility.

Cider Industry Continues To Claim Its Stake in Washington as Senate Approves HB 1179

Cider under 7% ABV to no longer be assessed eight cents per gallon by Washington State Wine; new two cent assessment to be used directly for cider marketing efforts

SEATTLE (April 14, 2015) – Washington state lawmakers passed HB 1179, legislation which exempts cider from the current Washington State Wine assessment, making way for cidermakers to apply their own assessment, allocated for the marketing of Washington state cider. With production exploding by a rate of 85% in the past two years, cider has quickly become the country’s fastest growing beverage segment, pulling it into a category all its own. This change in assessments will allow the NWCA to focus on marketing efforts on growing the industry, representing and promoting all styles of cider produced in Washington state.

“This is a step forward for cidermakers and the Northwest Cider Association’s mission to move cider into its own category,” said Sherrye Wyatt, executive director of the Northwest Cider Association. “Building upon the strength and tradition of Washington state apples, cidermakers see a unique opportunity to clearly distinguish cider as a premium beverage, to celebrate many cider styles and approaches, and to promote the Northwest as a world class cider region.”

Currently, Washington State Wine collects an assessment of eight cents per gallon on all wine and fruit wine, including cider. In January 2015, cidermakers introduced legislation to remove the assessment from Washington cider, currently defined as a maximum of 7% ABV. With the passing of this legislation, fermented alcoholic cider under 7% ABV will now be assessed two cents per gallon, paid directly to the NWCA. Cider produced above 7% ABV will continue to be assessed eight cents per gallon by Washington State Wine, and will not pay an additional two cents per gallon to the NWCA.

Comprised of participating members of the NWCA, a new marketing committee has been charged with determining how the marketing budget will be used. Initial efforts to include (but not limited to):

  • Education: Further awareness and knowledge of cider on a consumer and industry level through strategic tastings, print materials and event production.
  • Advertising: Build and execute a strategic advertising campaign to raise awareness, promote and embrace the diversity of cider offerings throughout Washington state.
  • Trade Shows: Provide opportunities for Washington cideries to showcase their products to buyers on local, regional and national levels.
  • Training: Implement a cider training and education program geared toward local bars, restaurants and retail establishments interested in carrying cider and/or expanding their selection.

“We appreciate all Washington State Wine does to promote and support cider,” added Wyatt. “With cider’s continued growth as its own category, separating our assessments made the most sense, but we look forward to continuing to work together to promote Washington-made beverages and agriculture as a whole.”

The new legislation will go into effect 90 days after Governor Jay Inslee signs it into law. Assessments will be managed and collected by the NWCA Board of Directors. While the Association represents cideries in Washington, Oregon, Montana, Idaho and British Columbia, the assessment and corresponding marketing efforts would apply only to Washington NWCA member cideries.

It was so well received that the two cideries decided to make ciderkin again in 2014. Much like a small beer in brewing, ciderkin involves rehydrating and fermenting pressed out apple pomace, yielding a beverage with 2.5%-3% abv. Fermented with natural yeasts from the apple skins, ciderkin is funky and slightly tart, with a nice tannic balance from the bittersweet cider apples. In addition to ciderkin cidermakers from around the region will be pouring their ciders and there to talk about them.

Cider Riot! presents the Champoeg Series. A series of limited edition unfiltered dry ciders made with organically grown hops from Pat Leavy’s Oregon Hophouse outside of Butteville, near Champoeg, the site of the first organized government in the Oregon Country. The first certified organic hop grower in Oregon, Pat Leavy began breeding his own hops, in order to develop varieties uniquely suited to organic agriculture in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Cider Riot! is happy to promote organic agriculture and has made a selection of limited edition ciders with some of Pat’s experimental hops.
Everybody Pogo™ our year-round hoppy cider, floral and spicy hop flavor from a classic English hop variety, one of the original varieties Pat Leavy began growing organically. Ready for your eager thirst™
Cidre de François Xavier Matthieu– a dry cider made with Leavy’s X-17 experimental hop, which lends its fruity tropical notes to the cider. This cider is dedicated to F.X. Matthieu, a Québécois revolutionary, and one of the original founders of the Republic of Oregon at Champoeg in 1843.
Experimental Hop A109-9- Classic Oregon hop flavors and aromas abound, dank, resinous, piney and a hint citrusy, this hop dominates the cider.

REVEREND NAT’S HARD CIDER PRESENTS 2ND ANNUAL HOPPED CIDER FEST

This massive collection of hopped ciders requires street closure this year and adds more offerings including international ciders.

Reverend Nat’s Hard Cider is pleased to announce the return of the Hopped Cider Festival to their Cidery & Public Taproom in northeast Portland. The second annual event will take place Saturday, April 18from 12 PM to 10 PM, the day immediately following the Craft Brewer’s Conference in Portland. New this year is an expansion of the festival into the street adjoining the public taproom.

This is the second Hopped Cider Fest put on by Reverend Nat’s Hard Cider, having launched the concept last year very nearly on a whim. Public response was overwhelming last year with nearly 800 attendees crammed into the cidery for eight solid hours. This year’s event will include a street closure and even more ciders including hopped ciders produced around the world.

Many cidermakers will be on hand to inform attendees through the samplings which will be available in 4-ounce tasting portions in a souvenir festival glass. In addition to the superb range of ciders, the event will feature food from El Taco Yucateca and the returning favorites Bro-Dogs + Burgers. And in a repeat of last year’s festivities, every hour on the hour attendees will be treated to free tastes of ciders unavailable for purchase in Oregon including ciders from all over the USA and overseas.

“This is surely the largest collection of hopped ciders in the history of the universe,” says Reverend Nat West. “Last year we organized the event in a couple weeks and were blown away by the public response. We learned our lessons and decided to expand into the street but we are doubling-down by adding even more hopped ciders and upping the tasting pour size.”

Tickets are available for $20 at the door (cash or credit). Admission includes a tasting glass and 6 tasting tokens. Additional tasting tokens will be available for sale onsite for $2 each. Re-admission will be allowed at any time with event wristband and tasting glass. THE EVENT IS 21 & OVER ONLY. No dogs or other pets. Full list of ciders available at http://revnats.com/HoppedCiderFest/

Reverend Nat’s Hopped Cider Fest benefits their neighbors, the Community Cycling Center.
