Governor Inslee Proclaims September 4-14 Washington Cider Week

Governor Inslee Proclaims September 4-14 Washington Cider Week

Statewide celebrations offer more than 100 events to taste the glorious golden beverage.

OLYMPIA, WA – Governor Jay Inslee has formally proclaimed September 4-14 Washington Cider Week, further acknowledging the apple state sits at the center of the country’s fastest-growing beverage.  Cider will be flowing throughout the region during the 10-day celebration from Seattle to Spokane, Pullman to Wenatchee, and Yakima to Tacoma.

“Three years ago when the idea of Washington Cider Week was in its infancy, we could not have imagined the support the cider industry would receive so quickly,” said Sharon Campbell, owner of Tieton Cider Works and the driving force behind establishing the Northwest Cider Association and Cider Weeks in both Washington and Oregon. “A proclamation by the governor was way beyond our dreams!”

Founded in 2010, the association has grown from 10 to 50 members, and Cider Week’s events have exploded from a handful to hundreds. Washington Cider Week started four years ago as a way to introduce more people to cider. “Now it’s a week of celebration by those who love cider  and who want to introduce their friends to this fabulous beverage,” said Campbell.

Northwest cidermakers, known for their creative innovation and commitment to quality, are getting well-deserved recognition from around the world. This spring they earned a collective 80 medals, placing in every category, at the Ninth Annual Great Lakes International Cider and Perry Competition.  Recently two new cider competitions were launched by Northwest cidermakers themselves, the Portland International Cider Cup by Reverend Nat’s Hard Cider, and the Pacific Northwest Cider Awards by Seattle Cider Company, further demonstrating this pursuit of excellence.

This year’s Washington Cider Week events range from the simple to the significant.  For example, the eve of cider week marks the launch of Cidercraft Magazine, the first glossy, consumer publication in the United States solely devoted to the timeless beverage.  Campbell is not surprised that historic events such as this are happening in Washington, where cider is quickly moving to the mainstream. “After all,” she remarks, “If a cider culture doesn’t happen in the Northwest, where will it happen?”

Additional events include cider and apple pie paired with two opportunities to meet renowned food writer Rowan Jacobsen during the  release of his new book Apples of Uncommon Character (Yakima, at Gilbert Cellars on Sept. 4; Sept. 5 at Seattle’s Town Hall).  Some daily highlights in Seattle are cider cocktails, food pairings, and cider flights at Boka Restaurant and Bar, 30 taps featuring only Northwest ciders at Capitol Cider  and samplings at PCC Natural Markets throughout Puget Sound. The Cider Summit Seattle on Sept. 5-6 is followed by the grand opening of a new cider pub by Schilling featuring over 30 cider taps in Fremont on Sept. 6. A very special chef’s dinner is planned every night at the Salish Lodge and Spa, debuting their new honey cider, in addition to local ciders expertly paired with special courses.

Washington is one of six states in the U.S. celebrating a Cider Week this year, joining California, Michigan, New York, Oregon and Virginia.  This year’s sponsors are the Northwest Cider Association and Northwest Travel Magazine. Seattle Cider Company Partners with Wirtz Beverage Amidst Cider Comeback

Seattle’s first cidery since Prohibition brings its uniquely dry ciders to Illinois

Chicago, IL – Seattle Cider Company and Wirtz Beverage have announced a new partnership to bring Seattle Cider’s unique selection of craft ciders to Illinois, beginning August 15. Seattle’s first cidery since Prohibition, Seattle Cider is known for its handcrafted collection of flavorful ciders while Wirtz Beverage is regarded as a leading wholesale distributor of beer, wine and spirits. The agreement between the two company’s comes as alcoholic cider sales continue to boom across the U.S.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Wirtz Beverage to bring a new type of cider to the cider lovers of Illinois,” said Joel VandenBrink, founder of Seattle Cider Company. “You’ll taste something different when you try our ciders. We’ve created flavorful, small-batch ciders with limited sweetness using all natural ingredients and fresh pressed Washington apples, making for a truly unique product.”

Established in August 2013 by Joel VandenBrink, Seattle Cider’s products break the mold of overly sweet cider, bringing the natural flavors of Washington apples to the forefront. Made from a custom blend of local apples and flavorful additions – such as fresh berries, peppers and more – Seattle Cider’s products are handcrafted with all natural ingredients and never made from concentrate. Their unique taste has earned Seattle Cider a number of awards and accolades including gold and silver medals in the Pacific Northwest Cider Awards, in addition to many loyal drinkers. Currently, the in-demand, naturally gluten-free ciders are available in Washington, Oregon and Alaska.

“Cider is experiencing a major comeback and it’s very exciting to see,” said Jeff Roth, VP Alliance Craft Beer Division at Wirtz Beverage Illinois. “It bridges the gap between beer and wine, so it’s no wonder cider is popular amongst many drinkers. Seattle Cider is putting out some really innovative things and really doing their part to bolster the category as well as consumer options.”

As sales continue to climb, industry predications expect cider will soon claim 3-5 percent of overall beer sales. Last year in the U.S., alcoholic cider was a nearly $1.32 billion industry. When Seattle Cider launches in Illinois with Wirtz Beverage, it will be available statewide at restaurants, bars and retail stores with a variety of products available in 16-ounce cans, 22-ounce bottles and on draft, including:

Dry: One of the driest ciders on the market, the golden glow of the unique unfiltered cider lends way to notes of lilac, blood orange and green apple on the nose. Pleasantly acidic, flavors of nectarine, under ripe peach and tart cherry hit the palate with no residual sweetness. 0 brix, 6.5% ABV, 16-ounce can.

Semi-Sweet: A light, crisp cider with just a touch of sweetness, this cider is honey in color with notes of bergamot orange, lemon and apple. A refreshing cider, it reveals hints of citrus and cinnamon on the palate. 3 brix, 6.5% ABV, 16-ounce can.

PNW Berry: This summer seasonal cider is crafted with locally-grown raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries. Softly tart with a flavor of young raspberries at the start and softly sweet on the finish, it’s a cider that is both refreshing and full-flavored. 1.8 brix, 6.9% ABV, 22-ounce bottle.

Pumpkin Spice: This semi-sweet cider is copper in color and perfect for cooler weather as the cidery’s fall seasonal. Fermented with pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and cloves, it offers hints of the season’s favorite spices followed by just a touch of pumpkin. 3 brix, 6.9% ABV, 22-ounce bottle.

Three Pepper: A small-batch, limited-edition cider, the Three Pepper features an aroma of fresh, green jalapeños. Paired with a unique flavor profile, it combines the taste of poblano, habanero and jalapeño peppers, giving this cider a kick followed by a subtly sweet finish. 3.2 brix, 6.9% ABV, 22-ounce bottle.

Wirtz Beverage Illinois will support the launch of the Seattle Cider portfolio with activations in the on- and off-premise, including samplings, trainings and events.

Find the message in the bottle to win – Merridale winners!

For Immediate Release

Vancouver Island, Cobble Hill (July 14, 2014)

After 25 years as craft cider makers on Vancouver Island, Merridale is celebrating with a new look and new products. And they are doing it in the most imaginative way using social media!  When asked about the campaign, marketing assistant Ryan Watson said, “It’s all about our new release, Monarch, and our new look labels which will soon be seen on all of our cider products.” “We wanted to engage our Merridale followers by giving them something fun and rewarding,” said Jess Howard, manager at Merridale, “so we created a treasure hunt for our loyal Merridale fans.”

The contest, lasting throughout the summer, challenges Vancouver Islanders to get outside, and find one of the 25 special Monarch cider bottles, hidden at various points of interest from Victoria to Nanaimo.

While some of the hiding spots are quite well-known, others are a little more unusual. Take, for example, the clue to bottle number 5 – If Protection Island is in your view, you must be near a raised canoe. Chris Rivers was the finder of this bottle, hidden near a public art piece called the Squamish Canoe on Nanaimo’s waterfront. “As an avid explorer – and Merridale fan – it was a chance to get out and play adventurer in my own town,” said Chris of his experience. “And  when I found the bottle, it was a moment of genuine joy. What a great idea for a contest!”

While other bottles have proven a little harder to find, the clues have been no less imaginative, which can be seen by following their twitter feed @merridalecider, or Instagram at merridaleciderworks. Searchers should keep their eyes peeled for a glass bottle with the new Merridale label on it. Finders of bottles instantly win a growler at the Merridale Farm with a gift certificate for use in their store. But if a picture is taken where the bottle is found, finders are entered to win one of three grand prizes- tickets Brewery and the Beast (now sold out), Rifflandia Music Festival, or a romantic Merridale get-away (includes Sunday pizza night with live music and an overnight stay in their yurt).  Not bad odds when the maximum number in the draw will only be 25!

When asked about the name of the new product, Janet Docherty, co-owner of merridale, replied, “It seemed appropriate to call our new cider Monarch.  We are one the oldest craft producer in BC making organic cider from true cider apples.  Monarch is dry, full of bubbles, and embraces our philosophy. Although our look has changed, our methods have not. We stay true to the core.”

Visit Merridale at the farm (1230 Merridale Road Cobble Hill), or ask for it by name at your favourite pub, restaurant, or local liquor store.

For more information contact Janet Docherty at 250-743-4293, or 250-920-9453.

Portland International Cider Cup Results Released

Portland, OR – June 30, 2014 – The second annual Portland International Cider Cup (PICC), sponsored by Reverend Nat’s Hard Cider, announced the winner of the cup and medalists. Held on June 22, 2014, the day was huge success with 53 entries among 16 cider producers.

The Cup went to newcomer Apple Bandit for their Apple Bandit Original, which achieved a gold medal in the Common Sweet Cider category. The runner-up was Finnriver Black Currant Cider, gold medal winner in the Fruit Cider category. The following ciders also won gold medals in their respective categories: Blue Mountain Estate Winesap (Common Dry), Rogue Pink Gin Cider, (Wood/Oaked) and Bull Run Pear Wine (Specialty).

“On behalf of the PICC Planning Committee we couldn’t be happier with the event. Last year, Merridale’s Cyser won the Cup, which is a universally acclaimed cider. This year, newcomer Apple Bandit won the Cup, which is very exciting, and should prove to be a boon to this start-up cidery from Southern Oregon,” said Nat West, founder of Reverend Nat’s Hard Cider.

The non-Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) competition is for commercial producers only, and is open to ciders produced in the Pacific Northwest within the geographic bounds delineated by the Northwest Cider association. Judges are a combination of experienced BJCP judges, experienced non-BJCP judges, industry professionals and commercial cidermakers.

Please see the website for a complete list of all medal winners: http://reverendnatshardcider.com/picc/.
